DENSAN to perticipate in Milan Design Week 2015
Piazza Mercanti 2, Milano
NEW DENSAN 100
In Japan there are 219 items designated as traditional handicrafts, the techniques and skills of which have been nurtured in their places of origin throughout Japan over their long history and passed down through the generations. Imariyaki and Aritayaki porcelain, Nambutetsu cast iron and Nishi-jin traditional textiles are the best-known around the world.
One hundred items have been selected to be exhibited under the title of “NEW DENSAN”, items which match modern sensibilities and fit in with western lifestyles.
The recent Japanese food boom has put Japanese handcrafts in the limelight and they are now highly appreciated around the world. Encouraged by this, DENSAN has taken this trend on board and is now developing products which fit in with the different lifestyles of people around the world.
Handmade pieces which embody the skills of a master craftsman have an appeal which mass-produced industrial products can never match. We hope that our exhibit will enable us to share our love of traditional Japanese crafts with the public.

Densan - The Association for the Promotion of Traditional Craft Industries
DENSAN Association is established in 1975 for the promotion of Traditional Craft Industries in Japan, affiliated with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and runs a shop in Aoyama, the centre of Tokyo. From over 1,000 craft products in Japan, the Japanese government (METI) has instigated a programme to foster traditional crafts, under which 219 items (as of December, 2014) have been designated Traditional Craft Products, called “DENSAN”.
All over Japan, there are craft industries, which have been active since ancient times.
The techniques to make handcrafted household items have been passed down from one generation to the next, and each type of craft has its own regional characteristics.
Created with traditional techniques over a century old, it has innovated from time to time with the changes in our lifestyles, and still remains the part of our daily life. The product can also be said as eco-friendly, for most of crafts use natural materials.
Our mission:
-To create new assets through Japanese Traditional Crafts and international culture
as a part of METI’s “cool Japan policy”.
-To Inherit Japanese cultural and traditional crafting to the next generation.
-To create completely new business collaboration with companies all over the world.
-To adapt the environmentally friendly Traditional Crafts to a ecological and recyclable
society.
