From over 1,000 craft products in Japan, the Japanese government (METI) has instigated a programme to foster traditional crafts, under which 219 items (as of December, 2014) have been designated Traditional Craft Products, called “DENSAN”.
All over Japan, there are craft industries, which have been active since ancient times.
The techniques to make handcrafted household items have been passed down from one generation to the next, and each type of craft has its own regional characteristics.
Created with traditional techniques over a century old, it has innovated from time to time with the changes in our lifestyles, and still remains the part of our daily life. The product can also be said as eco-friendly, for most of crafts use natural materials.
